IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses written as four decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). With about 4.3 billion possible addresses, IPv4 space has been exhausted.

IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses written in hexadecimal groups separated by colons (e.g., 2001:0db8::1). This provides roughly 340 undecillion addresses — enough for the foreseeable future.

Understanding IP Classes

IPv4 addresses are divided into classes based on the first octet:

Private vs Public IPs

Private IP ranges (not routable on the internet): 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16. These are used within local networks. Public IPs are globally unique and routable.
