NATO Phonetic Alphabet: Spell Out Text Clearly
2 min read By OhMyApps
When spelling something over the phone, similar-sounding letters cause confusion. Is that “B” as in boy, or “D” as in dog? The NATO phonetic alphabet eliminates this ambiguity by assigning a unique, distinct word to each letter.
The NATO Phonetic Alphabet
| Letter | NATO | Letter | NATO |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Alpha | N | November |
| B | Bravo | O | Oscar |
| C | Charlie | P | Papa |
| D | Delta | Q | Quebec |
| E | Echo | R | Romeo |
| F | Foxtrot | S | Sierra |
| G | Golf | T | Tango |
| H | Hotel | U | Uniform |
| I | India | V | Victor |
| J | Juliet | W | Whiskey |
| K | Kilo | X | X-ray |
| L | Lima | Y | Yankee |
| M | Mike | Z | Zulu |
Numbers
| Digit | NATO |
|---|---|
| 0 | Zero |
| 1 | One |
| 2 | Two |
| 3 | Three |
| 4 | Four |
| 5 | Five |
| 6 | Six |
| 7 | Seven |
| 8 | Eight |
| 9 | Niner |
Note: “9” is pronounced “Niner” (not “Nine”) to avoid confusion with “No” or the German “Nein.”
